A viral health post claims that taking two tablespoons of salt every morning can eliminate bone pain, nerve problems, cartilage wear, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
That claim is not supported by medical evidence—and taking that much salt could actually be dangerous.
Salt contains sodium, an essential mineral that the body needs in small amounts. But the difference between getting enough sodium and consuming excessive amounts is important.
Why Your Body Needs Sodium
Sodium plays several important roles in the body.
It helps regulate:
- Fluid balance
- Nerve impulses
- Muscle contractions
- Normal cellular function
Your body does need sodium, but more is not better.
For most adults, health authorities recommend limiting salt intake to less than about 5 grams per day, which is roughly one teaspoon of salt from all sources combined.
Two tablespoons of table salt would be several times that amount and should not be used as a daily health remedy.
What Happens When You Consume Too Much Salt?
One of the best-established effects of excessive sodium intake is an increase in blood pressure.
