Emersyn “Emmy” Bridgers was only 6 years old. She had just celebrated kindergarten graduation, was excited about starting first grade and had already picked out a rose-themed outfit for the new school year.
Then, on July 27, everything changed.
Emmy had gone to the hospital for what her family understood to be a routine tonsillectomy. But according to authorities, the scheduled surgery ultimately did not take place. The little girl died that afternoon, leaving her family devastated and investigators searching for answers, according to WSBTV.
Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton said medical records are being reviewed to determine what treatment Emmy received before her death. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy.
At this point, officials have not said what caused Emmy’s death or indicated that a tonsillectomy complication was responsible.
