“No I will not do that.”
“You owe this family some respect and loyalty.”
“I owe you absolutely nothing at all.”
“Everything you currently have in this world came directly from us.”
My parents had outright refused to pay my basic college application fees back in the day just because Cameron needed brand new football equipment.
“You clearly stated last night that I was not a part of your family.”
“That was obviously just a harmless joke Harper.”
“No it was not a joke but rather a very clear confession of how you actually feel.”
He slammed both of his heavy palms down onto my thick glass conference table. “Your mother already told all of our friends we are going on this trip so do you even understand how terrible this makes us look?”
“Yes I do understand,” I replied calmly. “It makes you look extremely accurate.”
His loud voice suddenly dropped into a very threatening whisper. “If you continue with this nonsense your brothers could completely lose their businesses while Madison loses her store and we could even lose our family home.”
“You really should have considered all of those consequences before you decided to start stealing from my companies.”
Genuine fear finally entered his eyes for the first time in his entire life.
The heavy wooden door opened right behind him. Carmen confidently walked in alongside two professional forensic auditors who were carrying heavily sealed plastic evidence bags.
Dad stared blankly at the shiny metal badges clipped to their leather belts.
“What is the meaning of all this?”
I slowly closed the folder resting on the desk right in front of me.
“This is the exact moment you realize you targeted the completely wrong daughter.”
Six agonizing days later my desperate parents demanded an official family meeting inside the legal offices of Carmen Ramirez. Dad arrived wearing his best navy suit while Mother nervously clutched her expensive pearls.
Cameron and Wyatt sat quietly next to Madison right behind our parents. Carmen placed four thick investigative folders right in the middle of the large wooden conference table.
Dad cleared his throat and decided to speak first. “Harper this entire situation has gone far enough so if you restore everything we will agree to forgive this disgusting little spectacle.”
“Are you seriously telling me that you will forgive me?”
Mother folded her hands tightly together on top of the polished table. “You just need to apologize publicly and reinstate our vacation while stopping these ridiculous audits.”
Cameron quickly added his own demands to the growing pile. “You also need to release the freeze on all of our bank accounts.”
Their collective arrogance was honestly almost completely impressive to witness in person.
I quietly grabbed a remote control and activated the massive wall mounted conference screen. A highly detailed financial spreadsheet immediately appeared for everyone in the room to clearly see.
“Over the course of four years,” I began explaining, “Dad illegally diverted corporate money while Cameron falsified his business expenses and Wyatt profited immensely from trust property while Madison submitted totally fake inventory invoices.”
Wyatt jumped out of his expensive leather chair. “That is an absolute lie and you know it.”
Carmen simply slid a copy of his legally binding signed lease agreement right across the table toward him.
He instantly lost his fake confidence and slowly sat back down.
Mother stared at me with wide eyes full of absolute disbelief. “Did you actually hire people to investigate your own flesh and blood?”
“No I did not do that at all. The professional auditors simply investigated random individuals who blatantly breached their legal corporate contracts.”
Dad aggressively pointed a shaking finger at the glowing digital screen. “Do you honestly think a bunch of stupid numbers make you a powerful person?”
“No I do not think that but I do know that hard evidence gives me all the power.”
I tapped a single button to play the crystal clear audio recording from his recent visit to my office.
His panicked voice echoed loudly through the room saying his sons would lose their businesses and his daughter would lose her store while they lost their house.
Then my own recorded voice answered him by stating he should have considered that exact outcome before stealing from me.
Dad turned completely white and looked like he was about to pass out right there on the floor.
“Every single conference room in my corporate building records all meetings for security purposes,” I informed him.
Mother angrily swung her entire body toward him. “You specifically told all of us that she knew absolutely nothing about the missing money.”
Carmen slowly opened the final folder of the large stack. “Apex Ventures will legally agree not to request formal criminal prosecution if every single dollar of the diverted money is fully repaid within ninety days but our primary lending partners were already legally notified about these massive breaches earlier this morning.”
Dad swallowed hard and tugged nervously at his tight shirt collar. “What exactly does that mean for me?”
“It means your major commercial expansion loan is entirely frozen effective immediately.”
Cameron leaned forward and whispered in a totally terrified tone. “What is going to happen with my commercial landlord?”
I looked at my older brother and offered him a very polite smile. “I am actually your commercial landlord.”
“Your current lease agreement remains completely valid but every single dollar of that deferred rent you owe me is now due in full.”
Madison started crying and her voice cracked loudly. “You are completely destroying all of our lives.”
“No I am simply stopping myself from protecting all of you from your own terrible choices.”
Mother stood up so fast her chair almost fell over backwards onto the carpet. “I am the woman who gave birth to you.”
“And I am the daughter who spent fifteen exhausting years paying heavily for that exact privilege.”
“We are your actual family Harper!”
I took a long moment to deeply look at every single person in that room who had laughed when Dad publicly excluded me from their lives. They had fully expected me to stay home and raise their noisy children while they went off to celebrate on a beautiful sandy beach.
“Family is certainly not a word you get to use only when you desperately need free labor or money or absolute silence.”
Two incredibly stressful months later my parents were forced to sell their beloved anniversary house just to pay off their massive debts. Dad only managed to save his construction company after he officially resigned as the president and fully surrendered his entire ownership stake to the corporate board.
Cameron had to permanently close one of his struggling restaurants so he could take a regular salaried job just to survive. Madison ended up selling her fancy luxury vehicle before completely liquidating her trendy boutique to begin repaying the massive credit line she had recklessly abused.
Wyatt got evicted from the trust property and had to move his belongings into a very small apartment across town. Mother spent her days calling various distant relatives to falsely claim that I had completely ruined their perfectly happy lives out of pure spite and jealousy.
The official civil audit records completely contradicted her dramatic lies and told a much different story of long term financial fraud.
Six months after that terrible dinner I was happily standing on a beautiful beach in the Bahamas with Carmen and the loyal employees who had originally helped me build Apex Ventures. We ended up staying in the exact same luxury villa that my greedy relatives had fully expected to occupy for themselves.
Right as the gorgeous tropical sunset began my expensive phone buzzed inside my pocket.
It was a text message from Dad saying they really missed me and begging for a chance to finally talk things over.
I simply smiled before turning the device face down in the warm sand and ignoring him completely.
For so many years I had unfortunately mistaken the feeling of being desperately needed by them for the feeling of being genuinely loved. Surrounded by wonderful people who truly respected my boundaries without constantly demanding huge pieces of my soul I finally understood the massive difference.
Carmen lifted her tropical drink high into the warm evening air. “I would like to propose a toast to family.”
I smiled brightly while looking out at the endless blue ocean water.
“I will happily drink to the kind of family we actually get to choose for ourselves.”
