My husband forced me to sleep in the car every night because my pregnancy kept disturbing his sleep—until his mother accidentally discovered the truth and gave him a lesson he never forgot. I was thirty-four weeks pregnant. My back hurt constantly, my ribs felt bruised from the baby kicking all night, and I had to get up nearly every hour to use the bathroom. I would roll onto one side, then the other. Fix my pillows. Sit up. Lie down again. Then do it all over. My husband Ryan and I lived in a small one-bedroom apartment on the third floor. One night, around three in the morning, Ryan suddenly sat up in bed. “I can’t take this anymore.” “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I can’t control it.” He stared at me coldly. “Then sleep somewhere else.” Before I could answer, he reached for my car keys on the kitchen counter and tossed them onto the bed. “The seats recline.” I just looked at him, stunned. “Ryan… I’m eight months pregnant.” “So?” he said. “I pay the rent. I need sleep because I have work. You’re on maternity leave. Sleeping in the car for a few weeks won’t kill you.” I thought he would apologize the next morning. But he didn’t. Instead, it became a routine. Every night, I carried my pregnancy pillow down three flights of stairs and curled up in the back seat of my car. Every morning around 6:30, Ryan would text me: “You can come back up now.” Then last Friday, everything changed. It was around two in the morning when headlights swept across the parking lot. A silver SUV pulled up beside my car. Someone knocked on my window. When I turned, I saw my mother-in-law standing there in her bathrobe. Her face went pale. “I came because Ryan wasn’t answering his phone,” she said. “I thought something had happened. But why are YOU sleeping out here?” I broke down and told her everything. She went completely still. “Oh my God,” she whispered. “I can’t believe I raised a son like this.” Then she walked back to her SUV and drove away. Fifteen minutes later, she returned carrying a long package wrapped in brown paper. “Come with me,” she said quietly. “You don’t want to miss this.” Ryan opened the apartment door with a sleepy smile. “Mom?” She handed him the package. “A little surprise.” He tore off the paper.
